Ongoing Lesson Progress - Homework Updates
During Year Ten, pupils will learn about key Media concepts that include how to analyse both still and moving image Media texts. A course induction will take place during the first six weeks before the preparation for the Controlled Assessment begins. During this induction, pupils will also be introduced to the first exam topic of Action Adventure - you will learn about codes and conventions of this genre as well as the typical Media Language that these texts make use of. Pupils will watch an unseen extract from the Action Adventure genre in the exam - an example can be seen below:

A useful website that you may wish to use in an effort to access the conventions of the Action Adventure genre is can be seen below:

The Induction lessons, should you have missed any of these can be accessed through the Powerpoint Presentation below:

GCSE Media Studies Induction

Following the completion of the Induction Unit, all pupils will begin the preparation for the Controlled Assessment. The task is to produce a 1500 word essay which analyses the representations of women in Star Wars Revenge of the Sith and Terminator 2. The plot summaries for both films can be found using the links below:
Revenge of the Sith
Terminator 2
Watch the following sequences and consider how women are represented? Do they challenge or conform to dominant ideology?

You can find each of the lessons that are taught in this unit through the link below:

Science Fiction Controlled Assessment
As part of the Controlled Assessment, pupils are also required to develop two contrasting film posters and an evaluation of these film posters. Each film poster should show an idea for a new Science Fiction film which represents women in a contrasting way. For example, in the film poster below, Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, is represented in a very anti-stereotypical way - how far do you agree?
You can also view some examples of pupils work below. This shows some of the SCience Fiction film posters they have created as part of their Controlled Assessment:

Action Adventure - Exam Topic
Following the completion of the Controlled Assessment, all pupils will be completing further work on the Action Adventure Exam Unit. Again, you will re-visit the conventions of the genre, which includes typical characters, setting and narrative elements. You will be analysing an unseen extract which is 5 minutes in length. Pupils will see the extract 4 times and take notes on 3 separate occasions. The exam questions will always be the same, if not worded slightly differently. You can see the typical questions below:

1               Explain two ways in which the characters and/or events in the extract fit the action adventure genre.
(10)

2               Explain how each of the following is used to create effects that fit the action adventure genre:
a.     Soundtrack
b.    Camerawork
c.     Editing
d.    Mise-en-scene
(20)

3               Discuss the ways in which people are represented in the extract.
(20)

Total   (50)

In the event that you miss any lessons during the Action Adventure Exam Unit, you can catch up on the work and extracts by visiting the link below which contains information about all sequences covered and the set questions:
